Dr Baird specialises in women's health histopathology, cytopathology and genital tract microbiilogy, in particular, the use of molecular biology, eg PCR technology, for the detection of viruses, such as HPV, in various clinical samples and/or histological sections. Dr Baird is recognised as having expertise in the understanding of how Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) acts in the pathogenesis of cancers of the anogenital areas.

Dr Baird trained in pathology at RPAH / Westmead and completed his PhD at the University of Sydney in 1981. He was Staff Specialist at Westmead from 1979-1983. He was responsible for all pathology for gynaecological oncology and perinatal medicine. He has remained a consultant for the ICPMR, Westmead since that time.

Dr Baird was the first in Australia to offer the simultaneous testing of liquid based cell collections from the cervix for the presence of HPV, Chlamydia and Gonococcus. Also, his laboratory has been used as a national reference centre for the detection of high-risk HPV DNA sequences in tissue sections by PCR technology.

He is a member of several international professional bodies. He is a past President of the NSW branch of the Australian Society of Cytology and was for five years, Editor of the national journal of ASC. He has written or co-authored over 40 publications.
