Dr Nigel Brown's experience spans 20 years as a consultant pathologist in chemical pathology. He trained as a chemical pathologist in Brisbane, completing his Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia (FRCPA) in 1989.

Dr Brown then practised in public and private pathology at Royal Brisbane Hospital for 10 years where his special interest included genetics, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, and endocrinology. His interest in genetics began during his medical training at University of Queensland when he undertook a BSc(Med), working on experiments in viral DNA repair within the biochemistry department.

Dr Brown left Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1999 to join QML Pathology, Laverty's sister laboratory in Queensland which is one of the two largest private pathology practices servicing Queensland and northern NSW furthering his interest in genetics, toxicology, and therapeutic monitoring as well as covering the full range of chemical pathology testing.

Dr Brown was appointed Head of the QML molecular pathology department in 2006 and supervised the consolidation of molecular pathology from across a range of sub-specialities into a new purpose built facility at QML. Dr Brown is currently a member of the RCPA Genetics Advisory Committee.

Dr Brown aslo has an interst in e-health and represents the College of Pathologists on the Standards Australia IT-014 Health Informatics Committee. He also contributes as an area expert to NeHTA (National E-Health Transition Authority) and AACB (Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists ) working groups.
