Semen Analysis

Semen analysis is a laboratory test that evaluates semen quality, including sperm count, movement (motility), shape (morphology), and other characteristics. It is commonly used to assess fertility or confirm the success of a vasectomy.

Sample MUST reach the Testing Laboratory within 45 minutes of collection. To meet this requirement, please contact your nearest Collection Centre before testing to arrange the best time and place to deliver the specimen. For a list of collection centres offering Semen Analysis, select one of the following services: Fertility or Post Vasectomy.

Due to specialised processing requirements, not all centres accept semen samples. Collection times may also be restricted.

How to Collect the Sample:

It is extremely important for an accurate result that you endeavour to follow these instructions to the best of your ability.

  1. Obtain a sterile labelled plastic seminal fluid collection container from a Pathology collection centre.
  2. The specimen must be collected between three and seven days after the last ejaculation (including sexual intercourse, masturbation or ‘night loss’).
  3. Empty your bladder, then wash your hands and penis before collection.
  4. DO NOT use condoms, artificial lubricants, talcs, etc., as these will interfere with the test.
  5. Collect the ENTIRE sample by means of masturbation. Other methods, such as interruption of intercourse, are not suitable as there can be loss of the first portion of the specimen. Collect the entire sample in the sterile container provided (yellow or white capped jar).
  6. DO NOT expose the container to extremes of temperature before or after collection.
DO NOT refrigerate the sample. It should be kept at body temperature (in your pocket close to your body) between 20°C and 37°C.
  7. Screw the lid of the jar on tightly and complete all the details on the label:
    • Surname
    • Given Name
    • Date of Birth
    • Time and Date of Collection
  8. Complete the details on Page 2 of the Patient Information Sheet, which can be downloaded below.

For Post Vasectomy Samples

It is recommended the sample is collected a minimum of 12 weeks after the vasectomy operation, with at least 20 ejaculations in these 12 weeks.
