Diabetes-related kidney disease test

A new blood test is designed to identify your risk of CKD up to four years before symptoms appear.

Diabetes-related Kidney Disease test

Diabetes-related kidney disease testing assesses your future risk of developing chronic kidney disease, helping support earlier monitoring and personalised management for people living with type 2 diabetes.

What is this test?

People living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). Approximately one in two people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes will develop CKD during their lifetime.

This blood test is designed to assess an individual's risk of developing diabetes-related kidney disease over the next four years. The results may help support discussions about kidney health monitoring and management.

Who should consider this test?

This test may be suitable for adults who:

  • Have type 2 diabetes
  • Have an eGFR greater than 30 mL/min/1.73m²
  • Want to better understand their future kidney health risk

Your doctor can advise if this test is appropriate for you.

How does the test work?

The test measures protein biomarkers associated with kidney disease and combines these results with clinical information to generate an individualised risk assessment.

A simple blood test is required. You can have the test at any Laverty Pathology collection centre. Your sample is analysed in an accredited Australian laboratory.

Results are provided to your referring healthcare practitioner.
